- MSDS
Material Safety Data Sheets
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is designed to provide both workers and
emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with a
particular substance. MSDS's include information such as physical data (melting
point, boiling point, flash point etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid,
reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill/leak procedures.
These are of particular use if a spill or other accident occurs.
- Carcinogen
IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) Monographs Programme on
the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans
The IARC Monographs series publishes authoritative independent assessments by
international experts of the carcinogenic risks posed to humans by a variety of
agents, mixtures and exposures. Since its inception in 1972, the series has
reviewed more than 880 agents, and IARC Monographs have become well-known for
their thoroughness, accuracy and integrity. To aid in the selection of future
topics, the programme also monitors long-term carcinogenicity testing underway
in various laboratories throughout the world and publishes the results on this
website as a Directory of Agents Being Tested for Carcinogenicity. The
Monographs are invaluable sources of information both for researchers and for
national and international authorities.
- HazDat
Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Regisry`s Hazardous Substance
Release/Health Effects Database
HazDat, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's Hazardous
Substance Release/Health Effects Database, is the scientific and administrative
database developed to provide access to information on the release of hazardous
substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events and on the effects of
hazardous substances on the health of human populations. The following
information is included in HazDat: site characteristics, activities and site
events, contaminants found, contaminant media and maximum concentration levels,
impact on population, community health concerns, ATSDR public health threat
categorization, ATSDR recommendations, environmental fate of hazardous
substances, exposure routes, and physical hazards at the site/event. In
addition, HazDat contains substance-specific information such as the ATSDR
Priority List of Hazardous Substances, health effects by route and duration of
exposure, metabolites, interactions of substances, susceptible populations, and
biomarkers of exposure and effects. HazDat also contains data from the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Comprehensive Environmental Response,
Compensation, and Liability Information System (CERCLIS) database, including
site CERCLIS number, site description, latitude/longitude, operable units, and
additional site information.

Methods
US Environmental Protection Agency Test Method Index
To respond to frequent requests for agency test methods, Library staff
developed a methods index as a reference tool to help locate copies. Confirming
that no one volume containing all agency methods and no comprehensive list of
them existed, in 1988 the EPA Region 1 Library produced a printed report: Index
to EPA Test Methods published as EPA 901/3-88-001. Since 1988, the Index has
been updated periodically to reflect new procedures and to remove superseded or
revoked methods. It includes only EPA methods and its primary goal is to
identify a source and vendor from which the actual method can be obtained,
either free or for a fee.
In the mid 1990's, electronic versions of the methods began to appear,
primarily on bulletin board systems (BBS) or on floppy disks. EPA air methods
have been available for some time via a dial-up BBS and now on a web site; EPA
has recently issued two compendium of methods for waste and water methods on CD
ROM (all referenced in Sources section). A few of the methods in this Index are
available on the Internet and a link appears in the Sources list to take you
directly to them if you have concurrent Internet browser access.
